Of Passing and Blocking

Roller derby, a game where so much is happening both on and off the track. And still, an essential part of the game takes place on just a couple of square meters, within the so called pack. The essence of roller derby is easily explained. Jammers, i.e. players with a star on their helmets, have the goal to lap blockers from the opposing team as often as possible. Blockers have a double function. On the one hand, they block (nomen est omen) the jammer from the opposing team, or at least they try to. On the other hand, they are essential to their jammer. Blockers hinder, when possible, the opposing block and create a path for their jammers.

On 23 and 24 of August 2026 a selection of Vienna Roller Derby photographs were exhibited at Atelier 03 in the context of the exhibition series rausgestellt. This exhibition was also accompanied by the publication of a booklet with fifteen photographs, divided over three foldable brochures.

The shown photographs offer a close view of the dynamic interaction between roller derby players. They are an invitation to linger in the action. Anticipate how the jammer will deal with the block. Look how the block prepares itself and how it makes the life of the jammer a bit more difficult (or how it helps its own jammer through). Take your time to delve into these pictures and experience (or relive) the moment.
